Maliheh Free Clinic | July 2016 – July 2017
For one year between medical school and undergrad I worked full time at the Maliheh Free Clinic through the Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) Americorps program. I had various responsibilities, including managing our EMR, recruiting and training new volunteers, writing protocols for clinic procedures, and assisting with clinic operations, especially interpreting for Spanish-speaking patients.
Sundance Mountain Resort | May 2016 –March 2017
Guiding guests on private high-speed zip line tours. Training, loading, and unloading guests, performing equipment inspections.
RISE Inc. Orem, UT | December 2013 –December 2014
Worked with one on one with individuals who have special needs to achieve goals and learn necessary life skills. Received training on the treatment plans for clients and helped them to achieve the behavioral changes they needed in order to live happily.
BYU Dept. of Physiology and Developmental Biology | December 2013-December 2015
During undergraduate training at Brigham Young University I was a lab assistant in the physiology department for Dr. Paul Reynolds. We were investigating the effect of cigarette smoke on the inflammatory pathway in a rat model. The principal proteins that we studied were the Receptor for Advanced Glycation End products (RAGE) and the Claudin family, especially Claudin 6.
My main responsibility was immunoblotting (western blots) occasionally running PCR and ELISA when needed for specific experiments. I also presented articles and participated in discussions during weekly journal club meetings. I was named as an author on one abstract for data that I had collected through western blotting of tissue samples. Citation is noted below

Ongoing project to change sliding scale targets in the Overland Park Regional Medical Center ICU to align with society guidelines for 140-180.
Investigating the efficacy of an educational intervention on perceptions, hesitations, and knowledge of Statin drugs for patients in the Access to Care clinic. Working with Dr. Mary Eguia as principle investigator.
Under the supervision of Dr. Bruce Gaynes, we collaborated with computer science and information researchers at the University of Illinois Chicago to model possible artificial intelligence strategies for data mining and meta-analysis of macular degeneration literature. My main responsibility was article scraping and analysis which was used by UIC in order to perform relational topic modelling. Artificial intelligence is still in the infant stage but with more investigation there is potential to track research trends over time and find connections between articles with similar conclusions and results. There were no publications that resulted from the work that we did with UIC, however the master’s student that I worked with, Siddhesh Kishor Chavan, did use the data to complete his master’s thesis titled “Topic modelling and clustering of documents related to age-related macular degeneration” in 2018
